Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Divorce

How will AI impact the Divorce Process?

In November 2022, ChatGPT made news with the release of a platform making artificial intelligence readily available for all.  For someone who is not technologically savvy, it’s hard to imagine all the ways that this technology will change the way people divorce.  Not sure myself, I asked ChatGPT for some help in predicting the future, and here is what ChatGPT reported:

There are a few ways that artificial intelligence (AI) could potentially be used to help with divorce:

  1. Predictive analytics: AI algorithms could be used to analyze patterns in data from past divorce cases and make predictions about the likely outcomes of future cases. This could help parties involved in a divorce to make more informed decisions about settlement options.
  2. Document review: AI could be used to review and classify legal documents related to a divorce, such as financial statements or property deeds. This could save time and reduce the need for manual review by attorneys.
  3. Mediation: AI-powered virtual assistants or chatbots could be used to facilitate communication between parties in a divorce, potentially helping to resolve disputes and reach a settlement more efficiently.
  4. Case management: AI could be used to manage case schedules and deadlines, helping to streamline the divorce process and reduce the workload for attorneys.

I especially appreciate the fact that ChatGPT reported:  “It is important to note that AI is not a replacement for human expertise and judgment, and it is ultimately up to the parties involved in a divorce and their legal counsel to make decisions about the divorce process.”

To the extent that Artificial Intelligence can help us predict outcomes in cases, analyze data, streamline the divorce process, help people communicate more effectively, I see that only as beneficial for families facing divorce.

The legal landscape is changing. At Hargrave Family Law, we are always looking for new and innovative ways to help families achieve the best outcomes in divorce.
