Embracing Change and Practicing Self-Care This Hot Dallas Summer

by | Jul 23, 2024

Summer in Dallas brings intense heat in many ways. From the obvious uncomfortable weather that limits outdoor activities, to juggling co-parenting while the kids are out of school, for those navigating the emotional challenges of divorce, it can feel even more overwhelming. At Hargrave Family Law, we believe in the power of self-care and mindfulness to foster healing and personal growth. This August, we’re focusing on practical strategies to help you embrace change and nurture your well-being during this transformative period.

Embracing Change: Self-Care Tips for a Fresh Start

  1. Prioritize Self-Care Activities Indoors With the scorching Dallas heat, it’s important to find ways to care for yourself indoors. Consider activities that promote healing and personal growth:
  • Journaling: Reflect on your feelings, acknowledging and accepting them, and track your progress as you work through the process.
  • Reading: Dive into books that inspire and uplift you. If you need a change in your environment, explore your public library and relax in their air conditioning.  The Dallas Public Library has lots of activities for children and adults at their many branches.
  • Creative Hobbies: Engage in painting, knitting, crafts or other long-forgotten passions to channel your emotions into something productive.
  1. Schedule Evening Activities As the temperatures cool in the evenings, use this time for self-care activities that rejuvenate your spirit:
  • Evening Walks: Explore your neighborhood or local parks during cooler hours. Invite a friend or neighbor to join you.
  • Outdoor Dining: Enjoy a meal at a favorite restaurant with a patio. Another great opportunity to invite friends to join you!  Here’s a list of the Dallas Observer’s “Best Patios in Dallas” to get you inspired!
  • Stargazing: There’s something important about feeling small from time to time, and we can’t think of a better way to feel small than to stand under the big Texas skye!  For suggestions on where to find great stargazing, check out this recent article about Stargazing from DFW Child Magazine.
  1. Cultivate a Support Network Reaching out to friends and family can provide the emotional support you need during this challenging time. Regular check-ins, whether virtual or in person, text or email, can remind you that you are not alone in this journey.

Mindful Mornings and Evenings: Techniques to Reduce Stress and Stay Present

  1. Start Your Day with Mindfulness Incorporating mindfulness exercises into your morning routine can set a positive tone for the day:
  • Meditation: Begin with a short, guided meditation to center yourself. There are numerous apps to help you. When your focus wanders, as it will, simply re-center on the meditation.
  • Deep Breathing: Practice deep breathing techniques to calm your mind and reduce stress. A simple one is to breathe in over 5 seconds, counting as you go, and breathe out for 5 seconds, counting as you go. Repeat for 3-5 minutes.
  • Reflective Journaling: Write about your thoughts, focusing on moments of growth and learning.
  1. Evening Relaxation Techniques Wind down your day with mindfulness practices that promote relaxation and peace:
  • Progressive Muscle Relaxation: This technique involves tensing and relaxing different muscle groups in sequence to release physical tension. Doing this also helps you focus with intention.
  • Mindful Listening: Listen to calming music or nature sounds to help you relax before bed. There are numerous apps available as resources for this.
  • Gratitude Journaling: List three things you are grateful for after each day to cultivate a positive mindset. Doing this will help you look for things to be grateful for throughout your day.
  1. Incorporate Physical Activity Engage in gentle exercises during the cooler parts of the day to boost your mood and energy levels:
  • Morning Yoga: Start your day with a gentle yoga session to stretch and invigorate your body, getting it ready for the day ahead.
  • Evening Strolls: A leisurely walk after dinner can help clear your mind, can aid in digestion of your meal, and prepare your mind for a restful night.
  1. Join a Support Group Connecting with others who are experiencing similar challenges can be incredibly therapeutic. Support group meetings provide a safe space to share your journey and gain insights from others.  Many of our clients have found support in attending DivorceCare divorce recovery support groups.  Click here to learn more about groups happening in the Dallas area.
